Pickleball at the Y

Pickleball is on fire across the country right now, growing more in popularity each day it seems. We’re proud to be offering designated time in our Gymnasium for our Pickleball players to get their game on! Pickleball is currently offered for members on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30AM-1:15PM. There is no cost or registration associated, and nets, paddles, and balls are provided, so all you need to bring is yourself. Players of all skill levels are welcome!

Pickleball Rules & Waiting System

  1. Pickleball play is on a rotational basis, 2 on/2off. Winners are allowed to stay on the court but must split, unless the 2 oncoming players agree to play together. When all courts are in use and more than 3 players are waiting, we will move to a 4 on/4 off system.
  2. Those waiting shall place their paddle in stacks in the “Next” waiting area. First available open slots flow right to left. The “Next” indicator shows who has the next game and is shifted left to right when the incoming players take the court. You may NOT move someone’s paddle unless they give you permission personally. However, we cannot force anyone to play alongside anyone, though we will encourage it.
  3. No new game can be started without checking the Paddle Stack for waiting players. All players must be present when a court becomes available. If they aren’t they can be replaced.
  4. Games are played to 11 points, win by 2. Normal scoring is in effect (only serving team can win a point), unless Rally Scoring is agreed upon by all four players on an individual court.
  5. All players must fully vacate the court at the end of a game during 4 on/4 off play. Players finishing a game must place their paddles in the Paddle Stack after vacating the court if they wish to play again. Players may not have a paddle in the Paddle Stack and be playing simultaneously.
  6. Groups of 3 must immediately obtain a 4th player or relinquish the open court to the next group; however they may continue to hold their place on the Paddle Rack while searching for a 4th player. This player may come from a game that has finished. It is hoped that players will be understanding and courteous to each other.
  7. If a group of 4 that has 1, 2, or 3 paddles in front of them wishes NOT to split up their group they do not have to. They should place their paddles accordingly in the second slot on the Paddle Rack and newer arriving players may place their paddle(s) in front of them.
  8. Volley serves and drop serves must be underhanded. Paddle must contact ball under server’s waistline. When serve is initiated no part of the server’s foot may touch the baseline or the court until after the ball is struck. Serve is made diagonally.
  9. When the ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce before returning, thus two bounces. After the ball has bounced once in each team’s court, both teams may either volley the ball (hit the ball before it bounces) or play it off of a bounce (ground stroke). The double bounce rule eliminates the serve and volley advantage and extends rallies.
  10. If the Pickle strikes a player above the wrist, any other body part, or anything a player is wearing, it is deemed a fault.
